Representatives from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and Toronto Catholic School Board (TCDSB) came together this week to mark the sale of 15 Trehorne Drive in Etobicoke to the TCDSB. Local trustees from each board, Dan MacLean of TDSB and Markus de Domenico of TCDSB, shook hands and exchanged words to symbolize the deal, which closed on October 8.

The property, formerly known as Scarlett Heights, was closed by TDSB in 2018 due to declining enrollment and has been vacant since 2022.

Following provincial regulations, the site was first offered to TCDSB, which purchased it to establish a new Catholic high school to alleviate enrollment pressure in central Etobicoke. In 2020, the province announced $26.4 million towards this project.

The sale generated significant overall revenue, which will be transferred to the TDSB. The TDSB will use these funds to repair and improve schools across Toronto, including the neighbouring Hilltop Middle School which remains operated by TDSB.

The Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC) has been working behind the scenes for several years to facilitate this agreement, including moving through the severance process with the City of Toronto. This agreement centers around TLC’s guiding principles to keep TDSB properties in the public realm so that they can continue serving their communities while generating resources to modernize all schools in the TDSB portfolio.
